Reading is a luxury for me but when I have the time and energy, I love a good book. In fact, I gauge a good vacation by the number of books I have been able to read. Here are some that I have enjoyed and think you may too.
For me, this is the best of both worlds – a little history lesson combined with the fantasy and excitement of fiction. Because of my direct connection to WWII, my list has several with that backdrop but there are a few others included as well.
Beneath a Scarlet Sky – Mark Sullivan
Lilac Girls – Martha Hall Kelly
To Capture What We Cannot Keep – Beatrice Colin
Code Girls – Liza Mundy
All The Light We Cannot See – Anthony Doer
We Were The Lucky Ones – Georgia Hunter
Self Help & Reflection
Always on a quest to embrace new perspectives, I do enjoy books that help me to self reflect and consider new ideas. I do not take 100% of the lessons they try to offer but I do contemplate them all and adopt changes in my life that resonate with me.
Brene’ Brown – Daring Greatly, The GIfts of Imperfection & Braving the Wilderness are the ones I have read so far. I follow her on Instagram too. Such great lessons and all based on research and fact!
The Power of When – Dr. Michael Breus
Lost and Found – Carol deLaski – she is a local author and business woman. Proud of her for leaping.
Biographies & Non-Fiction
Reading about the lives of others reminds me that we are all just people getting through life the best we can. We all make mistakes, feel joy and sorrow, and get ready for our day basically in the same way. Fun to hear the stories of their journey and see where our wandering paths united.
Becoming – Michele Obama – I loved reading this book. No matter your political affiliation, you should pick this one up. A great read for mom’s balancing life, career women, wives of successful men, and any women who had a dream as a child and wants to live it.
The Other Wes Moore – Wes Moore – changed my life and my perspective. Powerful book based in Baltimore.
Toxic Charity – Robert D Lupton
Patrick Lencioni – The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team and The Ideal Team Player
What’s The Matter With Kansas – Thomas Frank – No matter your political affiliation, this is a must read for all Americans. It gives you a peek into the brilliance of the Republican party, their patience and strategy to take advantage of opportunities that the Democratic party hand delivered. You will never look at what happens in our country the same again. While we may never know the actual agenda, understanding that there always is one is key to conscious decision making.
